Well, I've heard the expression "Won the whole shootin' match," but I've never actually done it.
Until today.
Seven other shooters showed up for the June Bowling Pin match. Two brought Major guns, four brought Minor guns, six brought revolvers, and six brought .22's. There were too few of us to break out Major vs. Minor, so we shot centerfire pistol as one class. There were a lot of malf's. Still, I managed to win all three divisions. (No malf's on my part, except for the loose nut behind the trigger.)
Note: Eight shots in the revolver class really helps. I only managed to clear a table in six shots or less twice. The rest of the time it took seven, and once it took all eight.
The next match is July 8. Hope to see you there.

Six people besides myself showed up for the Mother's Day bowling pin match, two of them new, and one of those an actual mother. Welcome to Carlos and Elda, and I hope they can join us again. The seven of us brought twenty guns: four Major, six Minor, five revolvers and five .22's.
I managed to win both Major, with my Kimber Classic, and Minor with my M&P. John Higgins won Revolver with his S&W model 19 shooting .38's (with <i>pinpoint</i> accuracy), and Jim Burnett won .22 in a come-from behind victory, cleaning my clock in four straight strings. It took him a little while to find his "A" game, but when he did, there was no beating him.
The next match is Sunday, June 10 - NOT a holiday. Hope you can join us.Kevin Baker
Today was a beautiful day for a match. Ten people joined me in shooting the March match, seven brought Major guns, seven brought Minor guns, four brought revolvers, and ten brought .22's. There were three new shooters to this match, which hopefully means that attendance will continue to improve. Major was won by Jim Burnett with his Clark Custom pin gun. I took Minor with my brand-new S&W M&P9. I also won Revolver with my S&W 327, and .22 with my Ruger Mk II. Not a bad weekend for a guy who just turned 50! I think I could have won the overall match, if I hadn't run out of 9mm ammo, but I did, and Jim Burnett took that match beating me two out of three for the win. Next month I'm bringing a Major gun again. Skip Blecker won the drawing, taking home seven dollars more than his entrance fee. He got to shoot for free and got a little gas money out of it, too. It had been a while since he'd attended one of these matches, but said that the last time he did, he won the drawing too. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good? The next match is Sunday, April 8. Hope to see you there.
Or: How we do things in the Big City.
Attendance was better this month. Seven people joined me to shoot the match. A couple of regulars couldn't make it, but a couple of others managed to rejoin us and a couple I hope will become regulars. Only two of us brought "minor" pistols, and one of us had function problems, so I managed to win minor for a change, essentially by default. All eight of us brought Major pistols, almost uniformly .45's. I had to be different, and brought my Witness in .40 for a change. But I'll come back to that.
Seven of us brought .22's. Jim Burnett took that class handily. I just wasn't fast enough this time. Five of us brought revolvers, two of them .44 Magnums with full-house loads. Let's just say the pin damage this month was significant. But I managed to win the Revolver class this time. I have apparently learned how to hit with my S&W 327. I even managed to clean a table with five shots, double-action once. No one was more shocked than I was.
Jim Burnett also won Major with his Clark Custom pin gun, and beat me for overall pistol champion, but here was the highlight of the day: The second set of the second round of Major, we had a little... "incident."
First rounds went downrange about 8:20 on schedule, and we were finished before 11:00. I managed a come-from-behind win for Major over Jim Burnett. John Higgins won Minor against his only competitor, Jim, and then proceeded to beat me to be overall semi-auto champ. Jim redeemed himself by winning the revolver competition with his S&W .41 Magnum. (Note to self: practice hitting the pins.) Travis Higgins took the .22 class handily. The only competitor not to win a class was Rick Lavaty, but he won the random drawing and at least got his entry fee back plus a dollar, so everyone was a winner today.
Next month's match is February 12. Hope to see you there!

It was a chilly morning, but at least this time it wasn't raining. Ten people showed up, four of us with revolvers, all but one with .22's. A bunch of regulars didn't make it, but several new shooters did, and one couple, the lovely and talented Capitalist Pig and his wife Mz. VRWC drove down from Phoenix to make the match. Once again, EUropellet shooters outnumbered those of us who prefer God's Pistol Caliber as designed by John Moses Browning (PBUH). And, once again, we had a variety of winners.
John Higgins once again took Minor with his EAA Witness. His son Travis took Revolver with his Python and unerring aim. (I have to work on the "unerring aim" part. Eight shots don't help if four of them are misses.) I took .22 rimfire again with my MkII Target, and Jim Burnett with his Clark Custom 1911 pin gun took Major and then beat John Higgins with his Witness to be overall match winner. 9mm is not always faster!
The match started on time at 0820, and we were all finished by 1100. I think it's safe to say that everyone had a good time. A big thanks to everyone who helped to set pins and tear down after the match.Kevin Baker
